Beds

According to a ministry

(it hardly matters which),

nearly half the beds in this

small island nation,

are all here on Sal.

Nearly half the beds in this

small island nation,

are occupied by those who

have their own beds,

waiting empty in their foreign homes.

Nearly half the beds in this

small island nation,

are subject to the fickle whim

of foreign tourists.

Unoccupied at will.

Some residents of this

small island nation,

struggle in slums

that tourists never see.

Or sleep in city squares.

I do not critique this

small island nation.

For the homeless population

in my own

larger island nation,

grows as fast

as skyscrapers rise

there too.

What future

for these two

island nations?
